Question - What is the correct teaching of tithes and offerings as in reference for us today and what church if any (I'm a baptist) is good because your web site has opened my eyes about searching for truth, because I'm always telling God Yahweh and calling God Yahweh is feels truthful if you know what I mean. Yahweh Bless Rob D.
Answer - Hi Rob,The original "tenth" (tithe) that was designated in the Hebrew Scriptures, was to support the Priesthood. The tribe of Levi did not have a land assignment, and no other source of income. The priesthood was assigned many responsibilities that they performed for this 10% allocation from the rest of the tribes of Israel.
The priests did not only prepare the offerings, they were the local butchers!
They were the doctors for Israel
They were the legal consultants, the lawyers, and the accountants
They were the advisers as to land planning, and for growing crops, etc.
The were the policing officers, and administred the Law, the cities of refugeIn short, they attended to ALL the civil needs for the nation of Israel (and filled all the basic service positions for the nation). For this they received 10% of the "gain" of the wealth gain of the others.
If they people (the nation) was successful, and there was a bounty in the land, the Levi's did well, because their success depended on the success of the people. This made them very willing to help the people in their needs because their income depended upon the "gains" of the wealth of the people and their land. Because of this, the laws were designed to help the people, but not to impair them.
There is no mandate in Scripture for a "tenth" today, because there is no Priesthood that serves us as in the Ancient days of Israel. Giving today is by free will, as you feel you have prospered, and you may give to whatever cause you desire to give to. This giving is to be in secret (not for a tax write-off). Any organization or Church that would compel you to give a tenth to them, because they think you are required to do so by Scripture, I would leave, because they are miss-using the Hebrew Scripture deceptively.
As far as finding a good "Church" I do not know which to suggest to you. Most have become corrupted and are far from Scriptural truth.....including most Baptist Churches. For example, they Baptize using immersion (which is the correct method), but then the use the phrase in the "name of the Father, the son, and the Holy Spirit" which is Baptizing into NO name at all. We must only Baptize into the name of "Yahshua Messiah" for it is only through the son, that we can be associated by the death under the water, and resurrected into a repentant renewed life.
